All about the Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya is Mexico's Caribbean coast stretching from Cancun in the north to Tulum and Sian Ka'an in the south. Full of picture postcard Caribbean beaches with Playa del Carmen at its heart

To the north of Playa del Carmen:

Puerto Morelos (estimated drive time from Playacar - 20 minutes)

A beautiful small village set around a small zocalo with a few restaurants and shops. Just off the beach is an incredible coral reef which is perfect for snorkelling and it is easy to arrange a boat trip to the reef from the beach. Close to the highway in the direction to Cancun is a botanical garden with a jungle path where you may spot spider monkeys with luck.

Isla Mujeres

A small island with some beautiful beaches, it is easy to get around by 'buggy' or bicycle. Catch the ferry from Cancun or Puerto Juarez - this makes a good day trip from Playa.

Cancun (estimated drive time 45 minutes)

The famous 'mega-resort' with a long hotel zone and beach. The airport is 40 minutes drive north of Playa and Cancun is 20 minutes further north.

Holbox

A beautiful tranquil island where it is possible to see whale sharks at certain times of the year - an overnight trip from Playa.

Cozumel

Just a few minutes walk from your villa is the ferry to Cozumel. Cozumel is world famous for diving and snorkelling. It is easy to arrange a snorkelling trip when you arrive at Cozumel - a short drive from the town.

To the south of Playa

Xcaret (estimated drive time 5 minutes)

A natural history theme park with significant archaeological sites, snorkelling, underground river trip - 5 minutes drive from Playacar.

Puerto Aventuras (estimated drive time 20 minutes)

A purpose built marina / resort with good beaches, restaurants, hotels, golf course. A good place to swim with dolphins. 20 minutes drive from Playa

Paamul (estimated drive time 20 minutes)

Another good beach with great snorkelling. A small bay. Caters for trailer camping. 30 minutes drive from Playacar.

Akumal (estimated drive time 30 minutes)

A small sleepy resort with two beautiful beaches and where the coral reef is close to the beach. It is very common to see turtles here when snorkelling - and rays, barracuda etc. Nearby is the Akumal lagoon where there is great fresh water snorkelling.

Xel-ha (estimated drive time 35 minutes)

Theme park with great fresh water snorkelling in lagoons and inlets.

Tulum (estimated drive time 40 minutes)

The world famous Maya site by the sea - this is a 'must do'. To the south of the ruins is one of the worlds most beautiful beaches with a fabulous coral reef - a short boat trip from the shore.

Sian Ka'an (estimated drive time 1 hour - Punta Allen 3 hours)

To the south of Tulum, the road goes all the way to Punta Allen, passing some fabulous beaches and the Sian Ka'an Biosphere
